Ken, I don't want to look for the manual I have for the loop set, SCR-131/ 161, but it used a Colpitts, I assume, because the inductance, the loop, was not tapped.
So I guess the BC-156 with its internal coil, no loop, uses a similar circuit ? 
I understand the Colpitts would give better stability. 
The coil could possibly have turns shorted to change the frequency range, non-permanently. The receiver likewise only uses one tuned circuit.
As I recall, you CAN net with it, but you would think the #10 osc tube would blast out the receiver ?
