[Milsurplus] German gun crew headset WWII question

Photo shows one side of a German WWII, I believe gun crew headset. Maybe Kriegsmarine shore guns? I don't know yet.
Anyway, anyone have a clue on this: The individual earpiece has a spring loaded clamp. The earphone element can be clamped up tight against the cushions,
normal wise, or you can flip open the clip, then the element swivels a little on the other hinged side of the element, to allow this air gap.
If the photo seems a bit of a puzzle to start with, at top is portion of headband, the large black rubber cushion, then electrical element swiveled to permit air gap.
What for ?
To allow some hearing ability of someone nearby not connected to the circuit?
thanks-
Hue
