This site is the PDF ( 3 MB ) of "Beach Partrol and Corsair Fleet" report on the Coast Guard's Washington and Oregon, horse-mounted beach patrols.
This patrol effort began shortly after the June 1942 landing of German agents at Long Island, New York, which itself followed shocking attacks by
Japanese submarines on the West Coast.

Plenty of photos.
I think the article errs, however, in suggesting that the pack radio used was the "35 lb. Army set", which would be the SCR-194/ 195. Another source
which I consider more reliable says Forest Service radios. The one photo of a backpack radio in the above article has an antenna which looks more like
the wire pole used a F.S. radio than the fat telescopic antenna of the Army set.

Here's another online offering:
"This rare documentary originally aired as part of the "Sea Tales" series on A&E. It tells a little-known story about a band of young yachtsmen and fishermen who were recruited during World War II to help protect the United States' East coast from Hitler's deadly fleet of Nazi U-Boats"
I have not yet watched this so no comment. 47 minute video.
