[Milsurplus] [ARC5] " M-1 " on BC-453 ?

Yep. And one obvious reason is that there is no mention of the BC-453, the
BC-348-EMOPS, the BC-348-HKLR or of any BC-224 model. Of course we know why
the mod might have been done to a BC-453-(*) (later in the War, there were
installations where the BC-453 was the only SCR-274-N component aboard the
aircraft, and the BC-348-JNQ models weren't the only ones flying). But the
AT's time couldn't have been written off to the T.O. if the T.O. didn't
mention the particular set that was modified. So keep looking! :-)

In a belated grand document organizational effort that is only 10% done, I
finally found the Tech Order for the "M-1" modification (T.O. No. 16-40-2),
and uploaded it to my website in the docs section -
http://aafradio.org/docs/TO_No_16-40-2.pdf
Perhaps that will put finito on the sporadic and often creative speculation
on the strange orange stamp that appears on the surplus reflectors from time
to time.
But somehow I doubt it... :-) Enjoy!

It was a universal mod for HF radios that simply placed a drain resistor
across the antenna input, intended to reduce the voltage built up by static
electricity on the antenna. There was a Signal Corps bulletin issued for
the mod, but I can't find it at the moment. I'm sure others will be happy
to interject with the gory details.
