Yeah, I'm familiar with that step-start approach but someone had located supplies that didn't shut down when the motors started. The guys I'm talking to are interested in that brand if I can find out what it was.

Try putting a low ohmage resistor in line to limit the current - - after the dyno spins up by pass the resistor. ePay has "resistance" wire or you can roll your own with small diameter wire.
