[Milsurplus] SC-901X question

Don't know what it was like designing with early silicon transistors.  Perhaps tubes were more rugged then transistors or perhaps more linear?  Don't think high power RF into the RX would be much of an issue for tubes as I've seen enough SRR-13s and FRR-23s with burnt open RF transformers but the subminiature tubes were still OK.  Replacing the open RF transformer brought the receiver back to life.
Life aboard ship must have been interesting for HF with TX and RX antennas so close together.  Silicon might have been less rugged, or at least the early generations were.  What was the old saying?  PN junctions protect fuses!Jim
I wonder why people argue over the 10% of their differences and ignore the 90% they agree on?

Yes, that's the job mine has been filling for maybe 25+ years now. I am leaning toward thinking I have enough other items so that role is already well covered.
The 2 tube slots at this low power I suppose could be transistorized. But the word "modular" - oh no. That may be the final straw that did in this back.

The SC-901 is a receiver-exciter and the precursor to the R-1051; there are two tubes in the RF Tuner.

Rumor has that it was designed for use in ICBM missile silos by Stromberg-Carlson, but I think it was actually a commercial product.  S-C was a division of General Dynamics starting around 1955.  Don't know about the development of the SC-901 but it appears to have been designed around the time silicon transistors were really taking off.  Except for the RF Tuner, everything else in it is solid state.

AFAIK, none of the modules are compatible with the R-1051 and perhaps not with any other radios in the G-D "family".  I have one but some of the modules have been hacked so there is little incentive for me to try to get it running.  Although it does a good job of keeping the metal storage shelves on the ground.

What's the 250 DC for ? This is all solid state, is it not ? Or am I in for another surprise ?
