It's 1960s (early) or late 50's vintage vacuum-tube gear, Peter, roughly
their equivalent to the AN/GRC-9. It's said to have been used by the
Chinese army as well as North Viet Nam during the conflict there, but
the sets that have been offered via Red Star Radio on eBay are all new,
sealed in original containers. The one I have had been unpacked and
was missing some of the accessories including the hand-crank generator.
Frequency range for the receiver is 2-12 MHz, transmitter 2-10 MHz, with
output power of 10-13 watts CW and 3.2 watts AM. The interesting
feature is that the transmitter and receiver were designed to work
together in a common housing with an interconnect cable that allowed for
metering, muting, etc. but the radios that have been sold surplus are
separate 102 transmitters and 139 receivers in their own sealed cabinets
which do not provide access for the interconnect cable. The receiver
has it's own battery box so the intention was evidently for use with
separate antennas and power supplies. It looks like a fun set to
play with on low-power AM and CW.
