Ah, Now it all makes sense! The ERA coupler, as originally designed, was hermetic. The front cover was solder sealed to the rest of the housing. This made coupler repair much more of a challenge. In fact, it was a DEPO repair, not done at the local organization.
One of the first mods was to replace the solder seal with a neoprene gasket. As with the ARC-21, subminiature tube reliability was dismal. There were evidently also some minor circuit changes along with the tube upgrade to more reliable W suffix tubes.
The illustration of a B-47 ties it all together nicely!
I have the manual, the plan is to scan it as a pdf and put it up on BAMA in the ARC-21 folder.
