[Milsurplus] [MRCG] [MRCA] WTB - Vintage Mil Aircraft Radio Components

The ARC-58 pumped 900W PEP and was one its positives respect to the 618T.
The ARC-58 reached about 1000h MTBF at its mid-life. The challenges with
the ARC-58 were the human side; this radio required very good techs for
repair and alignment; the frequency synthesizer system could not suffer
fools.
Call it ARC-58, TSC-15 or TRC-75 or URC-32, the ARC-58 family penetrated the
Air Force, Marines and Army. Therefore, DoD had a pretty good investment
with this Collins system.
In a time of urgent budget challenges, DoD decided to put the 618T family
mostly on new aircraft and keep the ARC-58 going to end of life. The 618T
family found its way to lots of aircraft such as OV-1, Huey, Phantoms, Navy
boats (SRC-23), ground and more. Of course, there were cases of 618T
upgrades.
In the B-52, the ARC-58 was replaced by the ARC-190 and the 618T was mostly
skipped. The TSC-15 was retired from the Air Force in 1982 and replaced by
HF-80 based TSC-60. This tells me that the ARC-58 family was good enough to
let it go to end of life. The introduction of the ARC-190 was not painless;
the first batches suffered from a semiconductor problem that took a while to
understand and resolve. Once this was solved, the ARC-190 was one of the
best radios in the service.
Lots of upgrades were done to the 618T family; I have a 618T translator that
was upgraded with URG II technology; for those not familiar with Collins URG
II, think 651S-1.
Best, Francesco K5URG

Still beings up the question what would you be using it for. I thought most
KC-135 had been refitted with 618T transceivers as soon as they became
available being the ARC-58 was hardly the most reliable radio. The MTBF of
the ARC-58 was around 400 hours and the MTBF of the 618T was 4,000 hours.
But imagine that if you had a large aircraft that came with an ARC-58 only
an ARC-58 will do.
Going to assume that this is just for static display or Ham use being that
none of this stuff would meet type acceptance these days.
Sorry for all the questions but this is a fascinating subject.
And if you decide that a 618T/ARC-94 would work may be able to help.

They were also used on the KC-135.

Just curious, what are you restoring that's big enough to accommodate an
AN/ARC-58? I thought they were only used on the B-52

All -
I'm working on the restoration of several aircraft and need the following
components. If you can help, please tell me what you have and how much $$
you require for it.
Thanks !
