That "fix" is described in my 1942 copy of Everybody's Radio Manual. :-)
For an open audio xfmr primary it recommended the resistor be 100K and the capacitor between .006 and .01 uF - "try several and retain the one that gives the best results."

Ray, this is probably been mentioned before, but I don't remember. I had a similar problem with a Russian set. Put a resistor across the open primary, powering the B+ to the tube. Use a capacitor at the tube plate to couple audio to the top of the secondary. You'll have to play with the values. It has worked fine on my Russian set for a long time.
