Davethis is a variant that I have as well and the short cable is not correct. There are different lenghts of cables as mentioned.
As for the brackets: they stay where they are, both units sit slightly clamped on canvas corners (or a replacement as they are often missing) covering the inside of the brackets. That's why the distance between the brackets is a bit greater than the box width. If you do not have the originals, take care to have them not too thick underneath as that will make the belts even more difficult to fix.
The two fixing belts are inserted from the center after removing temporarily the knurled nut (there should be a splint that needs removing first) and then they are routed to the outside of the frame. The gap bewteen the two angles is rather narrow and the belts usually rather short so it turns out to be a bit of difficult work to fix it - however it works. It pays to remove the units from the boxes and install the empty boxes on the frame first, easier to maneuvre. Fix the holder at the center first, then on the outside and then try to get the screw end through the hole to make the knurled nut take and allow you to tighten the belt.
Does that sound reasonable?? Let me know if you require any detail pictures, could make them.
