>Did you happen to see what the beat up Torn.E.b.
and the B47 went for?
The Torn.E.b went to a floor bidder for $160. It
had a missing tube and socket. The solder
workmanship was spotty. The inside was very clean
with no "pot metal disease." The crud on the face
was superficial. Looked like a good restoration
candidate. The B47, lot 381, went for only $30,
but it had some sort of broken control just below
the tuning knob and a missing control for "noise."
Otherwise it looked pretty clean. I would have
gone for it had I any room left on my "projects"
list. It went to an internet bidder. I hope he
understands the shipping bill he's about to get.

"Sold to f****r" means a floor bidder (person
present) won it. Other IDs like C****s and a****n
are bidders from the internet. If you see not
"Sold to," the item was passed on and Jim takes it
to the next hamfest.
When you bid via icollector, you get to hear the
auction as Jim calls it. Pay attention and be
prepared, because it moves fast. In prior
auctions, I've been called away from the floor by
work. I just follow-along on my Smartphone and
bid wherever I am. I once won a nice radio while
walking a half-mile out along the track from a
remote track control site. Once I got out of the
woods, drove back to Garland and went right back
on the bidding floor. There are reasonable
buyer's premiums (Jim has to pay his bills, too)
but usually, the prices are so sweet that the
premiums are modest, like the very clean and
easily-recovered BC-348R, lot 402, which went for
$25, and a nice clean pair of EE-8s for $30.
>What do you guesstimate the B47 weighed? (
Shudder....)
Hue, that B47 had a case of thick, solid,
heavy-gauge metal. You can see close-ups at
icollector. The face appears to be cast, then
machined. I don't know the reason it's so
"rugged-ized," but if someone told me it was to
protect it from "big gun fire," I'd believe it.
I'm not the best judge of weights, but I'm
confident if the thing weighed an ounce, it
weighed 50 lbs. I wish I'd had a place for it in
"The Cave." Those Brit sets make nice
"counterpoint" to the U.S. sets. One cool little
thing about Brit sets: Toggle switches are "OFF"
when Up, and "ON" when Down- opposite of the U.S.
standard.
