[Milsurplus] What is it? Clandestine?

My father, 12th Infantry, 4th Division, after
Occupation duty in Europe, was in formation at
dockside before boarding the S.S. Seabass to head
home. With all the grunts at attention, two
Master Sergeant noncoms told them that sneaking
any kind of souvenir aboard was forbidden and
anyone who got caught with one would be
imprisoned. But, as a grace to these combat vets,
if they put everything they were trying to sneak
home in a pile right now, all would be forgiven.
The piles were pretty big, with everything you can
imagine, including some my Dad hated to lose.

Turns-out, the two Sergeants were running a scam
and were keeping the stuff for themselves and
shipping it home.
But to answer about "shipping stuff home-" Dad
did indeed ship a package home containing two
revolvers he had "liberated" from German officers
and mailed a couple of weeks before ship-out. I
have one- a British Webley .45 marked for Queen
Victoria's armory (captured by the German, I
suppose) and my older brother has a French
revolver, IIRC it is 7mm. I don't know the story
of that one, but the Webley made its former owner
regret cussing my Dad for demanding he surrender
his unit to a lowly Brevet Sergeant.
