So Dave, the front cover, with microphone holder and speaker, folds up to give access to controls?
In this respect, it reminds me of the 1938 to 1940s Forest Service model SPF. Geoff Fors of California
has some earlier examples of BLM type radios. ( http://www.wb6nvh.com/CCC/RSPEC.htm )
The 400s model series of Northern is new one to me.
500s were transmitters or transceivers; 600s were receivers; I think 300s were direction finders.
Such items as yours were non-catalog products and never had flyers made up for them; also it seems Northern
just did not believe in advertising. The passage of time does a good job erasing the history of such items.

While you folks are talking about Northern Radio, has anyone come across any information on this radio, which was marked as a Bureau of Land Management radio from Alaska. Northern Radio type 450. Found it at a hamfest, traced what was what and got it working on 75 and 40 Mtr AM. 25 Watts out. Nice radio. Have never found a shred of documentation on it. Anyone??
