[Milsurplus] Antenna Tuner TN-174/GRA-4 Question

The answer is probably not, maybe (on transmit), and probably not. TN-174/GRA-4 consists of box, 12-244 uuf variable capacitor, neon lamp and Wire W-128 input and output feeders. The capacitor is connected in series between the input and output W-128 wire and the neon lamp is connected in parallel with the capacitor. It was intended for tuning the feed line to resonance with half wave length antennas of the sloping, L-type and off-center fed Hertz (AKA Windom) antennas (although in one place in TM 11-2651 it says that the tuner is only used with the end-fed sloping antenna). Transmitter output power is 100 watts maximum. The bag full of stuff sounds like most of an AN/GRA-4 Antenna Group, less the three 40’ sectional masts.

And the 100’ tapes were not used as antennas. They were for measuring how much antenna wire to spool off of the RL-122/GRA-4 reels.

Subject: [Milsurplus] Antenna Tuner TN-174/GRA-4 Question

I lucked out at a garage sale and picked up a BG-102-A Bag filled with antenna gear, Lamps, cords, for wire RL-22 reels, extra spools of antenna wire, halyards, a couple of signal corps 100' tapes (can double as an antenna) and the TN-174/GRA-4. (the lady wanted $10 for everything, I figured it was a great price for what she called old army crap).

Anyway, my question is, I have a 60' end run long (single) wire set up as my primary receiver wire I use for my BC-348, SCR-284-A, and my AN/GRR-5 (switched for each). Would it makes sense, or worth it to use the TN-174 to tune the wire? I hooked it up to the Angry 5, and the neon light glows, and instructions say to tune it to the brightest output, but it doesn't seem to dim or brighten, pretty constant. Is this helpful to my setup, or more of a hindrance?
