There is a VERY simple replacement for any ballast tube which was designed by RCA and 
implemented first in the SRR-11/12/13 series of receivers.

This replacement uses two zener diodes and a resistor. It can be adjusted to replace any 
ballast tube, including those in the R-390 series receivers. It also works FAR better than a 
ballast tube to control the filament voltage of HFOs.
