It occurs to me that this also opens up actual MF use of "lifeboat radios", altho their power is very low, around 5 watts output
max for the transceiver type, maybe 2-3 watts for the transmitter-only radios. Still, I think I recall reading that the range is given
at a couple hundred miles on MF. That of course is over sea water, but it also is with a not very long antenna. 

I do have 3 varieties of lifeboat radio, the transceiver type, because I was interested in the dual-frequency types to move the 8 MHz
range to 7 MHz and use it as a CW QRP radio. I have not gotten to this yet. But it does argue for leaving the 500 kHz section totally
intact. At this power level, believe you me, it is a whole lot more practical to use the handcranked generator than with some radio
such as GRC-9 or God forbid, BC-654.
