well they all had  the manually diddled   adjustable   crystal detector? or 
 were the later ones  replaced  with a  simple  diode?

BTW, was looking at a Mackay manual last night ( relaxing bedtime  reading 
) and it appears the 123 already existed in 1937.
So I guess it  maybe dated to a year, no more than 2, earlier. The first 
production of 123's  were for wall mounting which means to me
they had a cabinet of sorts. The  later ones were fitted into a console. 
This I think might account for the  suffixes. There was a 
123, 123A, and 123AB.
I realize this interests 6  people out of 6 billion.

Alignment  for this rig is quite "touchy."  The tuned 
circuits are really sharp  and it takes some patience to
get them all to track together  properly.  Follow the 
procedure in the manual and take your  time.
