I thought this subject was dead until I came across this. While at first I
though the call sign given was surely a ship, I happened to look over an
old AAF Flight Chart: Port Heiden, Alaska to Adak Island, Aleutian Islands
FC2, dated August 1944 (Restricted). There are a few fields on the chart
listing Wxxx call signs, i.e. for Adak:
Adak Tower 396 & 126.18
DF / WYUQ Rbn/Y-396
Adak Radio (four course range) is listed as "NCI-347".

 On Umnak Island, Glenn Field:
Glenn Radio (four course range) is "RS - 284", Glenn Tower frequencies are
272 / 126.18 Mc and DF / WYSP Rbn/U-272.

What puzzles me more is that these stations are West of the Mississippi.
I will try and reduce the size of a picture of Adak and send.
