I suppose with the pilot incapacitated, if you could get back to the U.K., at least you could bail out there and not be lost to the Air Force.
That is, if all the crew were in shape to bail out.

I recall my father telling me about in incident in North Africa. At the airfield his gun crew was guarding, a single B-17 was returning by
itself, and flying very slow. People could tell something was wrong, and everyone started running to the field. The plane came in for the
landing, but crashed, was totaled, and all crew died. My father said those were the first dead he saw in the war.
Yes, landing is the hard part, especially if something wrong with the plane or crew.
