As I understand it, the aircrew, being somewhat concerned about their health and longevity, 
did many things unofficially to help them when required to get back home.

As I mentioned to Andy, I remember reading of at least one flight engineer who both 
successfully brought a shot-up Lancaster with an incapacitated pilot home, and then 
successfully landed the aircraft.

I am sure this was not an isolated incident, but I would ask Andy to check with his forums in 
the UK about how common...or uncommon... this was.
