Your points are worthwhile. I tried out the coupling nut and yes, that is something I could have overlooked, if I had gone the knob route.
The shaft of the spline part feels very strong though, and I do not think a setscrew at normal tensioning could collapse it; that's just my take on it.

The box of RUGF stuff I bought at PSARA August 2017, unfortunately did not include any "good" coils, like G. But when I saw all those new-boxed
coils and control boxes, I knew I had to save it from some unknown fate or dispersal.

>.. the AN knurled coupling nuts should be used with the splined ends whenever you use them for local tuning knobs.  Else, they will fall off of the radio or control (usually when your back is turned so that you don't see where it went).  And also, if you use the splined ends to make local tuning knobs, you should insert a piece of solid rod to keep the hollow part that the set screw bears against from collapsing.
