"Electronics and Sea Power" does not provide much in the way of technical
detail but it is nevertheless a good overview of the subject defined by the
title and starting at the dawn of the electrical age. Note that this does
not only include radio but electricity in general (telegraph, searchlights,
sonar, radar, etc.). I have read the book two or three times and Hue's
mention of it in a recent email prompts me to dig it out of my library
again.
Another book I would recommend is "Secret Weapon" by Kathleen Williams
covering the development of high frequency direction finding.
Clay Blair wrote "Hitler's U-Boat War", in my opinion the definitive work
on the Battle of the Atlantic (1700 pages in 2 volumes), which includes
some information on naval electronics and weapon systems. He also wrote
"Silent Victory - The U.S. Submarine War Against Japan", another 1000+
pages. The list of references in this author's books is most impressive, it
must have taken him years to put it all together.
"Most Secret War" by R.V. Jones gives an interesting look at 1939-45
scientific intelligence from the British point of view, another volume I
have read more than once.
Finally, "Naval Electronic Warfare" by Dr. D.G. Kiely gives a more
technical overview of that subject up to the 1980's.
Does anybody else have military radio related reads they would recommend?
Happy tinkering.
Tom
