[Milsurplus] Cleaning FT-241 surplus LF crystals and other things

After many years of removing "crud" from crystals, meters, and other
sealed or enclosed parts, I wanted to share this. Most contaminants are
the result of outgassing or deterioration of plastics and rubber. These
seem to be dissolved and removed by either alcohol or acetone,
hydrocarbons, or water. Usually, the unwanted deposits will only be
removed effectively by one of these solvents, sometimes all three have
to be used with water being the last. In addition to sealed items, we
have all encountered equipment of many kinds that were fouled with
almost anything you can imagine. One of my most challenging but also
successful and rewarding projects was an Ampex tape deck that had been
stored in the basement of a greasy spoon diner with troublesome plumbing.
