I will make a guess  the open construction  for ventilation along with 
the popularity of the transmitter causing it to be used more than most 
other comparable equipment contributes to this.  It was one of the most 
sought after and actively used ham rigs of it's time, as well as 
continuing in active service both military and commercial long after 
many of it's contemporaries were sitting idle.  The high temperatures 
inside would tend to cook contaiminents onto surfaces as well.
