In my Navy CW days (66-70) I monitored and transmitted on 500Kc - NAW
and NGR. Had to keep the distress log - entering XX15-18 or 45-48 no
sigs. Seldom took traffic from it on our MF working freqs of 470 and
480, but copied waaaay too many XXX messages, and a few distress. When
the occasional merchant ship would call us we normally moved it up to
HF. In Greece, SVA, the coast radio station in Athens, did most of the
Med activity on 500. Interesting freq, but the Navy HF CW freqs were far
more interesting, and kept us busy.
Interestingly, in Gitmo (NAW) our main CW freq was 2836. NBA, NAR, NAU,
and NAM plus a few others also guarded that one.
