[Milsurplus] Thinking about RAX's and FAIR

I seem to recall many years back, don't remember quite when, FAIR RADIO was offering in their catalog some RAX receivers
without the top cover. I don't get that and still kinda don't. The top cover does have some spring clips that can get pushed out
of position, making it a challenge to seat the lid properly, that is, if you have the attention span of a very young child.
Or was it some kind of crude de-mil show effort?
I actually have an RAX where the lid is home-made. You can see at the corners where the cover lip is bent down and does not
quite meet in a spot welded junction. Pretty neat job otherwise.
