I've seen fleet operations where equipment was tied to the specific aircraft.
There were sometimes loaner units for when the regular gear was in the shop but
the repaired electronics were always returned to the original aircraft. Part of
this was because control heads and wiring would at times be specific to options
in the electronics box and sometimes this even prevented loaner units. If a
random box were replaced some function might not work right and that could be
dangerous or at least annoying and probably result in another service call to
try and remedy.
