Believe the TCS-5 series featured the "Stub" type front panel protectors, which the later ones abandoned in favor of the familiar loop type protectors.

It also had the protected type meters, with the lower half behind metal.

There are other differences.  My opinion - the "5" series were better built than those that followed. but mass production won out.
