[Milsurplus] Cockpit voice recorder, wire recorder

I got this Pierce wire recorder from a friend at the Charlotte
hamfest last weekend.
A little googling told me it was first used in 1948 as the first
cockpit voice recorder installed in and aircraft.

If anyone knows any more about it I'd love to hear from you.
There's not much online about it.
