The BC-474 is a great set for display at military meets and
rallies. Visitors enjoy tuning the receiver and listening to various
"short wave" transmissions. The set used in conjunction with a BC-611
gives the visitors a real feel for WWII communication.

Transmitter Operation on 40 meters can simply be done by changing
the padding capacitor C2 (100 pf) on the rear of the main tuning
capacitor C18. For the low end of 40 meters I used a 75 pf. The
receiver can easily be moved up by tuning T6. Yes the calibration scale
will be effected but I just simply use a pencil mark on the dial. All
easily changed back to original. Improvise-Adapt- Overcome.

The main problem with the set is powering it up especially in the field.
I've addressed this problem and discussed various ways of providing the
"proper" receiver bias including utilizing a small 9 volt battery. :-)

The BA-48 battery can be substituted and used on the receiver and this
of course solves the "bias" problem. Fair radio has depleted batteries
and they are very easy to rebuild.

Since I do not have a GN-44 I often set up an use a GN-45 hand crank
generator for display, it works fine but requires some minor easily
reversible wiring mods. Looks the same, smells the same, and works the
same. Visitors enjoy cranking the generator and hearing the set come to
life. And yes the B minus ground has to be lifted - details can be
found at:

Detail of the correct telegraph key and some photos by Dave AB5S can be

Photos of my BC-474 ops at Fort Miles Delaware can be found at:

Its a great set and the best part is you can lift it. :-)
