Now - second item of business. Steve Bartkowski has, or had, a 348 with the LF band coils rewound to give AM broadcast band coverage. 
Thinking about that, I had a hard time imagining it as anything but squirrely as you tune around 915 kHz. But he said it worked. Apparently it worked
well enough. But I am still filled with amazement to think about that concept.

With a BC-348 manual I bought a copy years back were a couple pages of notes that seemed to indicate an owner had modified one of the bands to
cover something like 30-50 MHz. Odd, and I wonder where that one ended up.
I did at one time have one of the single tube 10 or 6 meter converters, built from some conversion manual or article, which came with one of my 
BC-312s.
