The second AC-powered BC-348 I have, has a stamp in red ink on the top left of front panel:
MODIFIED FOR A.C.
READ INSTRUCTION SHEET
The second line almost makes you think it is 'mil', but a look at the AC PS convinces you otherwise. I think there's a resistor or something suspended by its leads.
This one is apparently some kind of surplus house product. The quality of the work is nowhere near the other AC powered one I have. The latter is the one I was
asking about, where to get screened hole plugs. It has several round, about 1 inch cooling holes, fitted with some force-fit screen plug, but all but one are gone.
I do NOT think any ham modification would have used screen hole plugs or used such a robust power transformer or the shielded, laced, and fastened wiring that
this one does.
Among the other oddities I have, are a 19-inch re-paneled one, NO change to front panel controls, no additions, just repaneled for 19 inches. This IS a ham job.
Also an R-648 FAC model. And a BC-224-A. ( There was one BC-224-A on Epay around 10 years ago; it had however, an incorrect, later nameplate on it! Went for
something like $1500+. ) ( Around 1985, a fellow I was corresponding with, in Colorado, told me he also had a BC-224-A. I lost contact with him and don't know
what happened there. His name was Cornelius something. )
I happen to prefer the non-LF models. LF is useless to me and the bandspread on 40 meters and up ( freq wise ) is slightly better.
When you look at the overseas remanufactured 348s, such as the German ones, or the Russian copies, it's an interesting story, and really not captured comprehensively
on any one site.
