It looks like the 12SJ7 (V-503) was bad…

---------------------------
Us old “rig fixers” know that this phenomenon is caused by “Radio Gremlins.”
Though closely related to “Screw Gremlins,” they do not steal parts or swap them
for other strange and unidentifiable parts. When a radio goes under repair,
Radio Gremlins will seek-out the most obscure and confusing parts and circuits.
They then lie in wait for the moment when you are most confident your repair
will be successful. They strike, taking great glee in your look of confusion and
frustration. A few cuss-words will have them dancing.
Alas, as with the Screw Gremlins, there is no cure. One must “grin and bear it.”
