[Milsurplus] GRC-106 and battery caps

Have been looking on line about the startup and operating procedure for the AN/VSC-2 teletype set up for the mutt, as most know this is a direction I have been working on for some time now.
Steps one thru five are this (FM24-19):

1 Drive ground rod into ground.
2 Fasten ground strap to top of ground rod and to binding post on mast base bracket.
3 Saturate ground around ground rod with water.
4 Assemble three MS-116, one MS-117, one MS-118, antenna tip, and cover for use with the 15-foot whip antenna.
5 Ensure vehicle battery cover and battery caps are removed.

Looking at step three wonder how you were supposed to saturate around the ground rod? But the interesting thing is that you are supposed to remove the battery compartment cover and battery caps prior to operating the VSC-2 or and I am going to assume the GRC-106 also. Was this a standard procedure to prevent gas from building up in the battery compartment during field operation? It would also explain why in this image the battery cover is off and the caps removed.
Yes I know it's a staged photo, but going to assume that the mutt was being used for something before the photo shoot.
