The local ham club has been given some equipment from the estate of a local ham, Ken
Hungerford, W7CVJ, who died some time ago.
One item is a TCM-2 transmitter, mounted on casters and with a separate commercial power
supply.
I have examined the transmitter and it is complete with the exception of the outer
case/cabinet. All tubes are present, and no hacks have been perpetrated on it as far as I
could see. The front panel is completely unmodified. It is very dirty, and would need a
thorough cleaning and a complete check out before it could be put on the air. The front panel
paint is in good condition.
The separate power supply is not original, but is obviously a commercial supply for a big
transmitter. The rectifier tubes are 3B28s, not 866As, and it includes overload relays. The
power supply is quite heavy, although it has not yet been weighed.
This transmitter and power supply are available for purchase by anyone who would want to
have it.
I cannot use it here as I am now the "proud" owner of a TCK-4, which is going to take at least
100 man hours to get in condition to use. Otherwise, I would love to have it.
I can supply photographs to anyone who might be interested in buying the TCM-2 and power
supply.
At one time, I had a brand-new TCM-2 with original power supply given to me by MARS. It
has more knobs and dials and meters per square inch of panel space than about any
transmitter I am familiar with. I just loved it. :-)
The TCM-2 covers 2 - 18 MHz, AM and CW. Final amplifiers are a pair of 803s, VFO and two
IPA stages are 837s. Navy rated power output in CW is 125 watts which is very conservative
as the 803 has a plate dissipation rating of 125 watts per tube, or 250 watts for the pair, so
under ICAS operation, they should be conservatively capable of ~400 watts output according
to the tube data.
The transmitter, with cabinet, would weigh 166 lbs according to the Navy. Without the
cabinet, it would weigh considerably less.
Anyone interested in this transmitter please contact me.
