OMG! Somehow found on initial, pre-use inspection: mHz dial could not got below 4 mHz. MHz dial has a gear wheel , and farther in: a special 3-winged cog, which meshes into the a mating 3-slots cog on the shaft which turns the bandswitch inside the RF unit (second from the left as we face the radio). One the 3-winged cogs has
A SERIOUSLY BENT TIP! No other damage is visible, but it can clearly NOT go into the mating slot! (It could be that nobody ever tried to get below 4 mHz on it, after something or someone force-turned against that tip so hard it bent…).
I have tried to bent it back straight enough to mesh and work properly. So far, it has not broken, nor shown visible cracking - but I dread! :(
Does anyone have or can help me find the mHz dial? I need all of it (except the knob) because that gear and cog are apparently pinned to the shaft. Or maybe, there’s a complete front panel that now needs a home!
Otherwise, if and when that mHz dial inner cog tip finally breaks (despite gentle use and a lot of prayer!)…I’m contemplating removing the little gear and cog assembly, then boring out a 1/4” hole through the front panel directly in front of the RF unit bandswitch shaft, so can could mHz by turning the 2 shafts separately. I believe the lower 2 bands to be very useful, along with all the others, when the power goes out, including emergencies.
And lastly (this time!) Can anyone refer me to or send a blow-up diagram/instructions for aligning and installing that mHz dial band switching arrangement? Sadly for me - unlike the R-390A, the gears, cogs and the middle gear plate, have no clear alignment markings! I’m setting all the mHz dials and bandswitch shafts to 2 mHz…but here’re still not enough indicators or marks…
-got the FU out of FUBAR so far (please pardon my French!)…not about to give up!
Thanks… :) Steve Saslow K7EW
