The subject is the PRC-74 series transceivers. I want to learn the identity of the TX PA transistors, a pair. The information I have, so far is number 996890, apparently a Hughes part nr.

Thank you1 -Steve k7ew Portland OR

I have used Greyhound in the past for both oversize items and also fragile items(neon signs), Prices where reasonable and the big plus is items are handled individually not tossed around off of trucks and conveyers. The minus is no delivery so parties on both ends need to be near a bus terminal. If I recall weight limits where 125# ( I never shipped over70#). Calculators where available on line.

On heavy items I have heard of guys using Fastenal ( the tool and hardware supply shops. These where acquaintances into farm stationary engines. Again the same limits as to delivery/pick-up, but hear we are talking items well over 100#.

Hi,

One possibility for shipping heavy items like that is the interstate bus
lines.

George,

I don't totally agree with Hue. If someone is willing to pay your cost for
crating it (it's too heavy for cardboard) I would do it if it appears to be
complete. The things actually work pretty well. Far better than any of
the current Chinese junk. It's main drawback is that it is dynamotor powered
and designed to require an FT-237 to operate in. The later AN/URM-48
(SG-12/U) is a better deal although unfortunately most were converted to SG-12A to
use with the later FM sets. At the very least, you should salvage the
dynamotor out of it as it is the rare DM-64-A for the BC-923. And the IF
section can supply parts to "de-convert" an SG-12A.

Hello all:
A couple of years ago I purchased ( thanks to this list ) the RBA-RBB-RBC receivers and 2 power supplies. I was living in NW Arkansas at the time. The receivers came from all points in the US. In each case, I called the UPS store closest to the seller and had them pick the unit(s) up, box them and ship them. IIRC, the cost was around $120-$140, including pick-up and packing. Not bad considering a +/- 100lb weight per box. Also, when packed by the UPS store they accept all risk for damage. All the receivers and power supplies arrived in working condition with no physical damage. The sellers didn't lift a finger. The UPS store charged a nominal fee for pick-up and were glad to do it.
I used the Greyhound bus service 40+ years ago for heavy items, such as broadcast audio consoles that were heavy and odd sized.?
Thanks, Durff, K4TQF?

Correction to one of my previous - all models of the I-208-(*) can be
operated from 12 VDC (if the DM-34 is present) or from 115 VAC. Don't know how I
missed that but probably because 30 or 40 years ago when I ended up with
the first one, I noted the plug to mate with an FT-237 in place of the
transmitter and never investigated further. Most of the rather considerable weight
of the thing turns out to be from the AC power supply. Next time I have a
BC-603/683/923 to work on, I'll have to dig one out.

Got another 30 minutes to "play radio" tonight.
Beginning to look like a triode-connected 6AQ5
is going to be the "right" tube to sub for the
un-buy-able Western Electric VT-1.
Non-destructive "tweeks" needed to get it
to work: Bias voltage divider fixed-resistance
reduced by bypassing from 10K Ohms to 5K.
Take 220K across the plate resistor to reduce
it from 100K to 69K.

I will be building the loop from 3/8ths rigid
copper pipe. In the mean time, I'm fooling
with connecting a coil in place of the loop
and link-coupling it to my Delta Loop.
The result was nice- good sensitivity.
There's a CW contest going on so great signals.
I've got a little "common mode" noise and
the headphone cable and hand capacitance
is causing a bit of "wibble-wobble" but the
concept seems to work well. Tank is the
small winding on the right. Remember the
thing is expecting a single-turn loop so the
capacitor has a large value. Winding on the
left is primary for Ant/Gnd.
This video was made using a lower-Z headset
so the volume is lower. When using the "normal"
Hi-Z headset, signals are so loud I have to move
the elements forward off my ears.

I'm getting enough TX power out to tickle the
Wattmeter a little. Don't have a good
reading on power yet because I don't trust
what my scope is saying.

20 minutes here, an hour there. Slow but
steady wins the race ;-)
