Everyone is familiar with the Bliley Crystals but I doubt many have
heard of KB Crystals from Toronto ON.Canada. A.Harry Blevis was making
crystals for the Canadian military at the beginning of WWII. His
background was as a commercial marine radio operator and he operated
amateur station VE3IJ from 263 Fairlawn Ave, in North Toronto. He became
senior wire chief at Canadian National Telegraphs and his name appeared
on most telegram letterheads. The crystals he produced carried the
logo "KB crystal Co." as his wife's name was Kay. Rumour has it one or
more of his crystals were on the Ark Royal when it went down.
His crystals seems to be very rare but our local Museum of Science and
Technology has one and its the only one I'm aware of. With the
discussion of Canadian made sets AR-2/AT-1, AR-6/AT-7 its possible some
members have come across one of these crystals?
Harry's son is still living in Ottawa, in his 90's and was a researcher
at the Can. Govt. Communications Research Center. Possession of one of
Harry's crystals would be of interest to me as I met him in his basement
"shack" 70 years ago and could never understand what he was doing with a
rotating circular grinder. Now I know.
