It was just reason, Hue.  The metal shells are not
 going to change diameter.  The Bakelite inserts
were swelling.  Some of them swelled to point of
splitting the steel shell.  Since Bakelite is made
with Formaldehyde, which is hygroscopic and
often contains hygroscopic fillers like wood dust,
and given their long-term storage in uncontrolled
climates, water incersion seemed a great possibility
and driving the water out might address the swelling.
So I tried it and it worked.  Now, maybe it's
something more complicated; I'm no chemist.
But it worked and that's all that matters.
