Well, it's maybe not a contest machine, but i recall seeing a lot of 2-MHz boat radio schematics  that showed no RF amp, and they seemed to be able to communicate to the limits of their power 
and inefficient antenna. I might even say that most of the old boat radios in this power class, did not have an RF stage. I might be wrong, but i'd bet it is close.

That radio is deaf. No front end.
