Perhaps Dave could explain exactly the types of power supply he's
using with the rig.
The 500 pF capacitor obviously worked well in conjunction with the
120V battery, which would have had a certain impedance. If Dave's
using a modern power supply, perhaps of variable voltage, it possibly
has a very different impedance, and possibly too much capacitance
at the output. That would set a minimum capacitance, below which
any reduction below 270 pF would be futile.
My suggestion: add some resistance or perhaps an RFC in series
with the 120V supply to isolate its internal capacitance.
