Well, yes, there are limits. For my TBW I use an 800-1 800 cycle
aircraft inverter, also known as a screaming Mimi. I measured 90 dB at
three feet, about the same as a subway train running through the shack.
It's all from magnetostriction; someone thought the bearings were
grinding, disabled excitation, and only heard some bearing noise and
windage. I tried putting it out on the porch, which broadcast the noise
to the neighborhood and they would have been throwing rocks at me. The
solution was a noise-reducing box, 3/4 inch plywood lined with 2 inch
thick fiberglass batts. The inverter throws off significant heat so I
had two chimneys also lined with 2 inch fiberglass, to pass air in and
out, with the blower inside. This knocks the noise down to 50 dB, and
depending where you're standing you nothing or a distant whine, which
really impresses visiting firemen.

If you go this route, glue and screw all joints, and put a bead of putty
inside, because an insignificant gap can pass lots of noise.
