[Milsurplus] WWII "Key" guys:

While not an uncommon key it is rather scarce and unusual. In that condition
it is certainly worth the price. What makes it unique was the Navy's
requirement to have the slot on the side of the key in which to insert a
wedge if a bug were to be used. Any J-38 on the other hand is pretty bland.

Dave, I see this as only appealing to a hardcore key collector. The key is
actually a pretty ordinary one, and there's no problem finding a good
condition to actually use or display. So this one, as I see it, gets its
value mostly from the original box, to display it as-is. A 'hangar queen'

I guess.

I have a couple J-38's in original packed box, and I've been going thru the
same thought process. I won't get a whole lot of money for them, and they're
easy to store. Once I sell them at a hamfest and the new owner throws the
box away, it's somehow lessened. So I've not sold them yet, still undecided.

( I recall many years ago I visited a vehicle collector in Portland OR. He
had 2-3 vehicles in backyard, one a DUKW, and his basement was like an Army
depot of some kind. All kinds of new boxed supplies. ( He had also some kind
of marker beacon or glide path transmitter on an L-shaped frame, for setting
out next to a temporary airfield. It was such a unique item I really should
have bought it. Hope someone did ! ) ) -Hue
