"The only time I ever took anything to UPS (Universal Package Smashers) to pack and ship, it was ruined in shipping due to the poor packing. And their "insurance" was a joke.
Ever since that incident, I've packed everything by myself that I've shipped, and not one single thing has been damaged in shipping.
YMMV

YMMV indeed ! This year, 2017, marks my 20th year selling & buying  on ebay. Mostly selling junque to audiophools and buying old military or other ham radios for my personal use. Over 1000 transactions and only 2 insurance claims. The most recent one (2014) was due to customs un-packing and re-packing everything both on the US side and upon arrival in Japan. ( Very fragile speakers ) I went thru a shipping broker in KC, MO, on that one. (Shipped VIA rail & container) The only other trouble I've had was when a case was cracked on an old radio... (UPS ). Insurance paid off full tilt on both claims.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Would I rather do the packing  myself? YES !  but, the front porch of my home is not an ideal location for a  shipping department. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Yes, if you live in a big city with a UPS shipping hub, that would be more desirable, as far as price. When I lived in Memphis, TN, I did that and yes, it was cheaper, but a PITA.  I'm now too damn old to be lugging 100lb boat anchors around.
My RBA-RBB & 2X RBC + power supplies were picked up, boxed and shipped thru UPS. Was it cheap? NO ( Over 100lbs each when boxed ) Did they arrive safely? YES  I recently had a 88lb RCA modulator picked up, boxed and shipped to me for $114.00 @ UPS. I'm not complaining.

I once shipped an ALTEC radio station console VIA Greyhound and they managed to break it... and it was built like a tank.
YMMV, Durff

PS: unfortunately, I think this is the last stop for my ham related stuff, after I'm gone... it will prolly go to the landfill.
