Hi David,

Wrap the radio in the correct bubble wrap if it is light - 5 - 10 pounds and
put the "stiff Styro" around it so it will not move. If it is heavy -
r-390a and other heavy stuff the styro is all round the equipment so it will
not move inside the box. Then get a larger box and surround the smaller box
with styro. We receive heavy com gear, amplifiers, and other stuff packed
the same way - most of the time just in one box. If ups drops it from 6
feet on to the floor all bets are off no matter how you pack it. To absorb
shock you would have to design a substance that would give a certain amount
depending on the weight of the object. Look how our ham amplifiers are
packed. Rigid styro - foam in place is rigid. Shipping 3-500Z are another
problem - fuzzy foam, double boxed and hope for the best. I have received
broken tubes packed that way.

The important thing is that you don't want the item to rattle around in the
box as its inferior packing material becomes compressed. The next time I
pack a heavy item I will post pictures. Will post a link to my dropbox that
can be accessed via a link on this list.

I do not understand using that stiff "Styrofoam"
insulation. It looks and feels to me like you're packing the radio with
stiff, wooden planks around it. I don't see how that stuff is supposed to
absorb shock; it looks to me like it would transfer the shock energy to the
radio as well as a wooden plank.
