Well, I don't know that I'd use the label "evil".  They are a service, and they need to make an actual profit, otherwise why bother ?
I also have a pretty good idea that they're not making massive bucks. More like "just getting by". I also think most civilians don't 
realize there is a markup from actual carrier rates, and it probably doesn't matter anyway if you're just  shipping a decorative
whatever to your Aunt for Christmas. At first, years back, I thought the rates were the same, but I soon wised up.
