You can get tri-wall (double thickness) boxes from uline. They are indeed
really sturdy.
I use blue wall insulation foam sheets from Loews. It doesn’t crumble the
way the white staticky stuff does. It isn’t as soft as the white but still
provides good cushioning/protection I think. Sold in 4x8 sheets so take a
Stanley knife with you to whack ‘em down to a size you can fit in your
vehicle.
Note: carrying 4x8 foam sheets through the parking lot on a really windy
day can be an adventure.
I have received some heavy but delicate items sent with foam-in-place. Came
through fine. I think a number of shipping places offer that now. Worth
looking for.
Where is Railway Express when you need them? That’s how all those
boatanchors were originally shipped. No foam, just form-fitted in 1-2
layers of cardboard.
