When I was still a H.S. student I was inspired by some QST article, "An NAA Receiver", and built a similar
one, using one triode. The construction was not up to HF standards, but -- it worked. I could copy stable
CW signals from the Navy's U.S. and overseas VLF stations. I even got a QSL from NPM thanking me for my
"valuable report", hi, like it was useful for them to know the signal would reach Seattle. Of course in Seattle
NLK's ( Oso, WA, near Arlington ) signal should be strong enough you could use a diode and a mechanical
wind-up chopper to copy it.
Some years later, I talked with a guy in Seattle, this around 1972, who was using a 2-FET regen for VLF, and
he had an impressive list of VLF stations from around the world logged. I always wondered how he could
accomplish that in the city, with a reasonable length antenna, and dealing with all the TV horizontal osc
noise. Of course now the noise is actually worse, with more squarewave switching devices broadcasting.
Kind of surprising too, I still have his hand-drawn schematic of the receiver.
