I just got off the phone with Kidde company, the manufacturer of fire extinguishers. I have 2, one for my vehicle and one for home.
There is a massive recall of Kidde extinguishers. There was a car fire and the responders tried to use a Kidde extinguisher to put out the
fire, but the plastic handle snapped so it could not discharge. The person trapped in the car burned to death, and lawsuit followed.
Kidde has tens of millions of the recall extinguishers out there. The recall was announced a couple months ago. I finally looked up my
two models and called today, expecting a long wait on hold, but I got right in. The call center person told me that the big rush was a
month or so ago and it's calmed down. I told her it must be massively expensive to ship out new extinguishers - they all weigh a lot -
and to pay to have them returned. She agreed but said it was less expensive than facing more lawsuits in the future. I thought I might
have all kinds of hurdles dealing with the recall but it was, if everything goes as promised, very easy. They only want the model number,
if it matches the recall series, the serial number, and the date stamped on bottom. No receipt or anything like that. So we'll see.
This is a site with a list of recalled models:
